Rocking Looks or Looking to Rock?

Sergio Mendoza Hochmann Said:

Looking cool does not a rocker attitude make. Back in the 1970’s, rock bands didn’t really care about perception of their image per sé, although, of course, certain acts – Kiss, Alice Cooper, David Bowie – did have to keep that in mind for marketing purposes. But then along came punk rock, with it’s devil-may-care, bullocks-to-the-government attitude. They dressed poorly because many times that’s what they were, poor. Bands like the Sex Pistols dressed on stage how they dressed off stage, in order to keep things, as we would put it nowdays, “real”.

The 1980s brought us glam rock, or how some call it despectively, “hair metal”. I find it some of the best music to ever come out of the pop environment, fun and with a devil-may-care attitude all around it. Back in those halcyon days, Los Angeles was the Mecca of rock and the more spandex you put around your body, and the more Aquanet you wore on your hair, the cooler you were (whether others thought so or not was another matter entirely). Bands like Poison made it a matter of honor to show, or rather, shock, others into believing and becoming a fan. Rocking looks were definetly on the menu in the 1980s.

But then something happened. The 90s rolled around. In August, 1991, I saw for the first time a video of a band and, as soon as I finished watching it on my Mtv, I knew things were going to start changing. I don’t care if it sound like bragging, but I’m also sure I wasn’t the only one in the planet who though that when he saw Smells Like Teen Spirit, by Nirvana.

Now, I’m not putting down the so-called alternative movement from the early-to mid-90s. Musically-speaking, they had their own fields to grow and avid teens from all over the globe reaped the fruits that those seeds spewed into our unsuspecting radios and tv’s. But something did happen, and it also had to do with clothing. I find it very interesting that, according to a college professor of mine, what the alternative movement started doing was glamorizing the anti-hero¬ instead of the hero image. No more were pretty boys in expensive leather clothes the ones people admired. Rather, it was that singer or guitarrist who wore the same clothes off-stage as on-stage.

A return to punk, maybe? Sure! In many ways, grunge took you back to those days in which anyone could be a rocker. There’s something to be said in that from the start. It was pretty good that many kids thought they could reach for the stars when their idols had been walking the same streets as they did a year before.

But I still find something disturbing. Back in the 1980s, those glam boys that you saw on Mtv and on Circus Magazine (and Metal Edge!) were higher than life. They were unreachable idols that, when you saw them on stage, made you believe in the fantasy of rock. Rock and roll is a star that you have to strive to reach. You can reach it in your own bedroom listening to your favorite band’s new record. You can reach it playing with your own band in your garage or at a party. You can reach it when you start playing small clubs and having people start to recognize you when you play those clubs again. And you can reach it when you become famous.

Alternative music took what was once sacred, hard-to-get and glamorous, and turned it into something mundane, ordinary, something which your next door neighbor might start doing next week. I’m not saying it was necessarily a bad thing. But could it be that by doing that, some of the magic of rock also became mundane?

Evolution of Rock Synthesizers

Victor Epand Said:

The genre was called the new wave genre, when the rock music took a new turn and after that experimental rock music came into being in 1980’s. This was the time, when various rock bands started using synthesizers purposefully in modern rock music. And thus rock synthesizers became popular gradually since then. But there was a time when, synthesizers were doing well mainly with the pop music, popularized by new wave leaders like Devo, The Buggles, and Gary Numan.

To get hold of the rock synthesizers, it is essential to know the base and a bit background of it. It was Robert Moog, who introduced the musician with a new world of unknown sounds with the invention of voltage-controlled and keyboard-accessible synthesizer. This further also gave them idea about sound production and control and thus curiosities increased and it began to enter the mainstream of pop music. However, the technological revolution experienced by the popular music made the performers to take advantage of the potentials of the synthesizers.

The synthesizer once was basically used for the same purpose as the electronic piano or an organ was used, just to make spacey noises in the background. Then came the synthesizers that were pushed to the front stage. This made the players dress in casual suits and platform shoes. However, by the early 70’s, many rock groups like, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and Tangerine Dream etc., started using the rock synthesizers explicitly due to its unique range of sounds. It was the rock-based form that mainly influenced their development in the next decade.

The 1980’s were the growing period of the underground music and thus the growth of the rock synthesizers, which resulted in increased use of the synths by more and more bands. Infact, many artists began to be known as synth rock artists. This is the same period that added new style and genres to the rock music, such as Goth rock and new wave. Or it can be said that it was the period that gave birth to new experimentations with help of the synth rocks and thus experimental rock music came into being.

Experimental music means a new kind of sound emerging out of the mixture of existing rock music and the sounds from the new rock synthesizers. The outcome of this experimentation is the album, The Residents (or Meet the Residents). But somehow, it failed to please the audience at the beginning, as they were not ready to accept anything except the traditional ones, like the space rock, ethereal sounds, or the old electric piano.

In the next decade, i.e. 1990’s, the rock synth changed its style of music. The style that evolved was basically the combination of 80’s new wave, 80’s, 90’s industrial music, glam rock, gothic rock and heavy metal. However, after 2000’s, the rock bands, or rather say synth rock bands were on the top of demand list of the people. Their experimental melodies influenced by the new wave music were successful in breaking the myth of the masses that rock synthesizers cannot rock them.

The Integral ”002” Album Review

Shane Skinner Said:

The Integral hails from the wonderful city of Montreal, Canada and they deliver eleven ”All Killer, No Filler” tracks on their album 002. Their brand of progressive-tinged heavy, yet very melodic rock sets them head and shoulders above the hordes of modern rock bands strutting their stuff on commercial radio and MTV.   That’s not to say that The Integral wouldn’t fit right in, they’d just do so with a lot more edge and originality.

The Integral’s music is very dynamic yet concise, never letting the band’s offbeat twists and turns ever overtake ”the song”.  The vocals stream melodically over the music and the lyrics and hooks are impeccable.  Heart-stopping heavier numbers like Constant and Cycle contrast more ambient and psychedelic-inspired moments found in Disassembled and the instantly memorable For Days on End clearly demonstrating the band’s willingness to experiment. A mind-bending instrumental track is even included for good measure, displaying a superb mix of groove and technique jam-packed with breaks, off-time measures, and punches.  The Integral’s approach works very well throughout and never grows tired.  In 2003, under the name Pacer, the band released an excellent 7-song EP entitled Involuntary Movement instantly setting the bar extremely high.  Unlike most bands who suffer the dreaded ‘’sophomore slump” The Integral have managed to surpass  their listeners’ expectations and prove that they are here to stay, and even better things are yet to come.

This is a standout release and you will not want to skip through any songs, which is a hard find these days.  Most Indie releases are plagued with murky production, but the sound quality on this disc is excellent.  If you like your heavy rock served up with a generous amount of creativity and intelligence, ”002” is what you crave

Rock the House With Van Halen Tickets

Al Terry Said:

Van Halen tickets aren’t just tickets to any rock concert- they are tickets to see one of the most monumental rock bands that have ever graced the face of this planet. These guys of have been rocking crowds all around the world for over twenty years and they are still going strong, with a brand new tour all set to take the world by storm.

Hard Work And Van Halen

Nobody said that becoming a star was an easy thing to do- just ask the Van Halen boys. Brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen decided to form a band, way back in 1972 and they were very serious about their music. They finally got a band together with the help of David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony. After trying a number of band names they finally settled on Van Halen, a name that would soon carve a niche for itself in music history.

Van Halen knew that making great music was just half of the journey in making it to the top. They also had to gig as much as possible and make themselves known to the public. The band began to play anywhere they could and were soon a regular feature on the Sunset Strip. The Van Halen brothers would go out to high schools before every concert, trying to bring in as many people as possible. Little did they know that in a few years, Van Halen tickets would be much harder to come by.

Breaking Through

Van Halen got their big break with the release of their album of the same name. Prior to this, Gene Simmons of the band KISS had been so impressed with the band that he had flown them down to New York to get a demo together. This boosted the confidence of the band enormously but they really didn’t have anything to worry about. The band’s first album was a smash hit, yielding a rash of number one hits. The boys showed absolutely no signs of slowing down, jumping on the touring bandwagon by opening for Black Sabbath. Soon the music biz was buzzing with this new band called Van Halen.

Musically, Van Halen seemed unstoppable and by the 1980s they were not only the most successful but also the most influential rock band around. However things were not going well on other fronts. David Lee Roth, the frontman of the band had cemented an image of a cartoonish image and distinctly pop flavor. Eddie Van Halen wanted to try something new for the band- tensions gradually rose and boiled over with Roth leaving the band.

This would herald what many would term to be a love-hate relationship between Van Halen and David Lee Roth. A number of fans were disappointed and sales of Van Halen tickets dipped slightly when the band brought in singer Sammy Hagar though he too would leave eventually. Despite all these issues, Van Halen has got a new line up with Roth back on vocals and the young Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son on bass. You can be there to watch it all happen- just get to an online authorized ticket vendor and order Van Halen tickets.

Have Fun Like a Rock Star and Stay Married?

Justina Mathews Said:

This week the world got some good advice on how to live a long and healthy life from -ironically enough- a rock star. The Who front man and 64-year-old rock sensation, Roger Daltrey is still setting the stage on fire while rockers a third his age are cancelling show dates due to “exhaustion.” And he says it’s all about the fun.

Daltrey’s youthful demeanor is due to “lots of walking and even more shagging.” Go ahead and take a look at him. Okay, I got distracted by an Ann Margret photo when they were in Tommy, but if you ever do catch a glimpse of the man now, he does look amazing. So sex is the key to youth. Who is this man dating? He didn’t say in the article, so I decided to do some research. Thank God for Google.

So while I’m typing in “Roger Daltrey + groupie” in the Google search field, I’m wondering how a man well into his Viagra years can get some attention. I mean, yeah, rock star, but really…You don’t see a lot of menopausal groupies out there. Although there was this one time a few years back, I saw a teenage hottie swoon over Iggy Pop. The man looks like an animated corpse and this girl who was barely old enough to like Rob Thomas practically falls face first into his lap. It’s lamentable. But I digress.

Roger Daltrey is not having fun with groupies. He’s enjoying a great time in a 37 year long marriage with his wife, Heather! 37 years. That is a long time. Now, I believe in the fidelity of love, but a rock legend deep in 37 years of monogamy seems almost unfair to the rest of the word. Is all this personal time happening at the home gym? Well, no.

Daltrey is a rockstar, after all. He’s fathered three children with Heather and four children without her in the last 37 years. The key to staying together, he claims, is honesty and patience, his honesty and her patience. How she’s put up with me I don’t know, but that’s the way it’s succeeded. She’s an incredible woman…I never lied to her. You’re in one of the biggest rock bands in the world…and…they’re throwing sweets at you. I couldn’t seriously come home and say, ‘I’ve been a good boy’.

Can you be monogamous and still have a happy and healthy sex life? It’s a good question for people who truly want it. If you don’t, honestly explaining this to your partner may save a lot of grief in the future. Either way, variety is the spice of life. And spice is the way to the longevity. If you’re going to live like a rock star, you don’t have to keep the groupies, but keep the honesty, patience, and intimacy.

If you want to follow Daltrey’s lead and keep up the intimacy, but you rather keep it up with one person, check out how to make it new over the years. Toys, role playing, fantasy sharing. You can have as many sweets as Daltrey but stick to only one box of candies.

History of Psychedelic Rock 迷幻樂的歷史 Part 1 (中文字幕)

hongkongscene Said:

among garage and folk rock bands in Britain and the United States. Psychedelic rock is a bridge from early blues-based rock to progressive rock and heavy metal, but it also drew on non-Western sources such as Indian music’s rāgas and sitars. While the first contemporary musicians to be influenced by psychedelic drugs were in the jazz and folk scenes, the first use of the term “psychedelic” in popular music was by the “acid-folk” group The Holy Modal Rounders in 1964, with the song ” …
