Tales From Topographic Oceans is the latest Rock CD released by the highly group Yes and they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Yes fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one.
It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn’t a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.
As a group Yes possess the characteristic of being able to bowl you over with their talent alone. The kind of musicians I really enjoy listening to.
Listen to this CD and I believe you’ll find there’s not much to dis-like about it. The songs are inspired, the production is simply outstanding, and this is clearly the work of a group of musicians in top form. So much so that if you’re even mildly into Rock music you’ll enjoy this CD.
While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 2 – Disc 1 – The Remembering High The Memory, track 2 – Disc 2 – Dance Of The Dawn, and Disc 2 – track 3 – track Giants Under The Sun
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – The Revealing Science Of God Dance Of The Dawn. Great track!

The Bath Fringe Festival is an annual celebration of arts that is hosted in the town of Bath in England. This festival takes place during the end of May/beginning of June every year and is usually a 17-day event. The Bath Fringe Festival showcases various forms of artistic talent with over 170 events taking place across these 17 days. The art forms featured in this wonderful event range from mainstream arts to marginal arts with Stand-up Comedy being at the forefront.
The first Bath Fringe Festival began in the year 1981 and evolved from the earlier community festivals. In the past, in terms of hosting events, Bath was famous for the Bath Music Festival, which was popular only among the upper class. To balance this out, the people of Bath decided to organise the Bath Fringe Festival. This festival was designed to appeal to a larger cross-section of the population of Bath, specifically targeting the younger local crowd who did not appreciate the more classical dominated music showcased at the Bath Music Festival.
Among the various forms of art that are portrayed in this wonderful 17 day event are Cabaret, indoor theatre, digital arts, street theatre, dance, circus arts and film. The Bath Fringe Festival also has a large musical element to it that includes an eclectic mix of various forms of music like folk, world music, Latin jazz, rock and pop. Through the years, various artistes, both local and international have taken great pride in performing at this event. The most famous of these are Arthur Smith, Jeremy Hardy, Ken Campbell, Mark Thomas, Bill Bailey, Julian Clary, Rory Mcleod, Billy Childish and Howard Marks.
The Bath Fringe Festival is said to have evolved directly from the Walcot Festival, which was a popular festival in the 1970s and early 80s. Today, the Bath Fringe Festival is the largest and oldest continually operating fringe festival in the world, which is a remarkable achievement considering its humble beginnings.
The events that take place in Bath Fringe Festival are varied and targeted at the different age groups. There are many events that appeal to adults of all ages, and others directed specially at the children. Some of the most popular events at the Fringe Festival include “The Wheel Thing” which is a pedal power festival, the Bath Community Carnival, the Bedlam Street Fair and the Outdoor Arts Festival. Along with the regular events, there are other new events added every year including several theme based events as well.

One word describes the CD Women And Children First from Van Halen… AWESOME!
This one literally grabs your attention right from the start with And The Cradle Will Rock… and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song In A Simple Rhyme, which by the way is another great track.
Women And Children First is a nicely varied, mix of 9 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly outstanding musicians. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own real life experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They’re all here.
Overall Women And Children First is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Rock collection. Truly an outstanding Rock CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

Festival of Music
Festivals in Leeds have a long and glorious history. A pair of very popular annual music festivals in England take place in two places, Reading and Leeds. Ordinarily these festivals take place in the bank holiday weekend in August. A music festival is defined as an event with a number of music programs played through a genre. The Leeds festival is certainly more than this, with many activities going on as well as the music, including fairground rides and stalls where you can buy just about anything you might need.
Initial days predominance of Folk Music
In earlier days the festival used to be folk based. Folk music is by, and made for, the common people. The history of folk music has its descent in those societies where mass communication did not make headway and in seclusion the music was original to the inhabitants of a particular place or society. The performances are given by a set of experts who gain expertise in the music within the periphery of the restricted environment of their own clan. The spread of musical knowledge is verbal. A new meaning was given to Folk music in the 20th and 21st century, referring to a particular kind of popular music with its cultural heritage from the traditional folk music. To day, folk music is synonymous with traditional music.
Festival today
The festival today, however, is not confined to folk music alone and has taken within its embrace alternative music of all sorts. It includes jazz, punk, dance, comedy and all types of modern music too. The festivals are regulated by the Mean Fiddler Music Group. Sponsors have been coming forward to sponsor the musical festival and the current sponsor is Carling. The festival is therefore termed as the Carling Weekend Leeds. The audience capacity at the 2005 festival was 57,500. In 2006 the audience capacity has been further enhanced to 67,500. The event is held at Bramham Park, a historical venue in Leeds.
Reading and Leeds Music Festival 2006
This year the festival took place as always over the bank holiday from Friday, August 25th to Sunday, August 27th. There were two locations as usual with most of the musicians playing in both Reading and Leeds over the weekend. The festival is so popular that tickets were sold out long before the event. A tradition that started in the 1970s of rock and heavy metal is still continuing. This year people will be happy to see a few of their favorites like Franz Ferdinand, Guillemots, Muse, Dirty Pretty Things, The Raconteurs and Goldie Lookin’ Chain. There are many others who are comparatively new but have the potential to become the craze of the crowd by the end of the festival.
The festival a chequered history
Although with a chequered history, the festival has grown in popularity over the years. When it started in 1971, the audience was a mere 15,000 and this has expanded to a staggering 60,000 over three decades of performances by popular bands. The early events were held in Temple Newsam Park but the experience was not always a smooth one. In 2002, the festival was nearly cancelled due to violence and crime during 2001. Though Police, M.Ps and local residents opposed it, the event licence was finally granted by the authorities. This happened only after a judicial pronouncement came up in favour of hosting the festival. But the violence increased in 2002, resulting in a conviction of a number of festival goers. The organizers therefore decided to move the festival outside the city to Bramham Park in 2003. Strangely enough, since then the crimes have come down considerably and the site has become the home of the festival. The City Council increased the audience capacity by 12500 in 2005.
Memorable events
The Leeds festival was not as popular as it is today always. But after a grand show by Rod Steiger in the 70s it picked up and went from strength to strength. The 1978 event ended up with bottle throwing. But in 1988 the events were better and attracted more people. In 1992, the Manics, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Wonder Stuff played and 1998 there were 55,000 in attendance watching Robert Plant and Ash, Beastie Boys, Prodigy, Supergrass and Bentley Rhythm Ace. The new millennium saw the arrival of Slipnot and many more new sensations. During 2001 playing were Travis, Manic Street Preachers, Eminem, Green Day, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Marilyn Manson. In 2005 saw the Pixies, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Marilyn Manson once again.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Reasonable Doubt gets. Reasonable Doubt simply put is one of Jay-Z’s best CDs to date.
I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Reasonable Doubt. Rock music, where did it all begin? Believe it or not a black man who played black music, originally founded rock music in the mid 50s, this man was Chuck Berry. Rock became popular almost over night, and was accepted with open arms by the younger generations. This was largely due to younger generations who were excited by the thought of having music that expressed their rebellious streak and their desires to promote anti-conformism.
This style of music is a far cry from the modern rock music of today that has evolved over the decades and branched out into a multitude of different genres and sub-genres to create music that is more a way of life than entertainment. However, the still prominent fact that rock is a form of self-expression and non-conformist desire still remains strong even after all this time.
Rock music grew stronger and stronger with idols such as Elvis Presley, around this time many of the black rock and roll artists left the rock music scene and in their place were a host of other white rockers with a style and look all of their own.
After Elvis Presley’s famous entrance, other well known rock idols and bands started popping up from everywhere, but something was lost along the way, rockers started losing sight the whole reason that rock and roll had become popular in the first place, which was non conformist and rebellious attitudes.
During this time rock, took a huge nosedive with the younger generations, who were uninterested in a mixture of country music, folk songs, and rock music. This was in the late fifties and musicians such as Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers were foremost rockers in the rock music scene.
Just as things were looking bleak, Bob Dylan entered the scene during the Vietnam War and held the heart and attention of many youth of the era with his songs of the Vietnam War and civil rights. Around this time, the Beach Boys changed the rock music scene with their new style of rock.
California had its own unique spin on rock and roll, which contained very sophisticated and vocal harmonies; this style of rock music was a change from the empathetic shouting that had first been introduced by the black musicians in the mid 50s.
In the early sixties, Britain took on a whole new aspect of rock and created a rage with bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Animals. During this era, the Yard birds also debuted and although they were in the shadows of the Rolling Stones, they were in fact the beginnings of something great, the musicians from this band were later on to revolutionize rock music all over again.
Nevertheless, it was the birth of the Beatles that created a worldwide mania and the beginning of rock music as a business was really born. Following the Beatles, the second generation of rockers were the Kinks and the Who, the Who had changed rock music forever with their mechanically amplified guitars and songs dedicated to the angry frustrated youth of the 60s
The seventies saw the death of Jimmy Hendrix, and the Doors Jim Morrison, and rock music cooled down. New bands, such as Nirvana and the Eagles, began a more peaceful revival of country music mixed with soft rock. The seventies were characterized by a quieter time in rock music.
The nineties saw the age of electronic music, and this new rage spread all over the world, and saw an era of many different genres of rock music, blended music and dance music mixed together. The 90s were also the decade of heavy metal and bands such as Guns and Roses and Metallica. This style of music split into a myriad of other sub-genres such as the funk-metal of Red-Hot-Chilli-Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More.
It is hard to believe that today’s rock music began with a single black man, singing a hybrid type of the blues, and flourished over the last five decades to become not only a choice, but also a way of life.
Rock music has evolved to become an array of different styles and sub categories, which provide enjoyment for a multitude of different tastes in music. What the future holds for rock music may not be known, although it is safe to say the rock music will still be around for the next five decades.
